Common-Wealth General Scholarship Program 2010

The Ministry of Education has assigned the task of conducting the Local GRE-General test for Higher Studies to the National Testing Services (NTS). The University of Cambridge has introduced a new scholarship scheme for applicants of undergraduate admissions from Pakistan for 2010 entry onwards. The 800th Anniversary Scholarships have been created with funding from Cambridge Assessment, parent of Cambridge International Examinations who provide school exams throughout Pakistan and around the world.

The scholarships at the University of Cambridge are for school-leavers from Pakistan who meet the usual examination qualifications for admission to Cambridge. Applicants for all courses except Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are eligible to apply.
The scholarships will cover the cost of your tuition and College fees together with a grant towards maintenance and travel costs for each year of your course. The maintenance element of the scholarship will take account of your financial circumstances.

The scholarships are competitive and are conditional on a College offer to study at Cambridge, including meeting any immigration and English language requirements. Continuation of the scholarship from year to year will be conditional on satisfactory examination performance.

If you meet the conditions above and wish to be considered for an 800th Anniversary Scholarship, complete a scholarship application form and apply for a place at Cambridge in the usual way, submitting a UCAS application and a Cambridge Overseas Application Form (COAF) together with your 800th Anniversary Scholarship application form by 20 September 2009.

Applicants for the scholarships will be interviewed in Pakistan in October/November 2009.

Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) is one of the flagship programs of Government of the Punjab. The fund aims to provide equitable opportunities of education to under privileged but brightest boys and girls especially from the southern districts of the province. This fund is nurturing much needed human capital which would, one day, contribute for social and economic development of Pakistan. Our objective is to bring brilliant but needy students to the best academic institutions and help them realize their potential and fulfill their dreams. This is akin to realizing the dream of a progressive and prosperous Pakistan.

1. What is PEEF?
Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) is an initiative of the Government of Punjab under the leadership of Chief Minister, Mr. Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif. PEEF endeavors to bring best educational opportunities to the less privileged and talented youth of Punjab in order to bring them at par with the more fortunate ones. Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) provides scholarships to the talented and less privileged students. In the first/current phase, PEEF is planning to award 5,000 scholarships.

2. What is the registration status of PEEF?
PEEF is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan under Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance, 1984.

3. Who is eligible for scholarship?
PEEF scholarships are need-based Merit Scholarships and will be disbursed amongst students who have passed Secondary and Intermediate Examinations in 2008 (annual) from Government schools / colleges and have secured top positions in their respective Districts, Tehsils, Levels (Secondary or Intermediate) and Streams (Science, Arts, Commerce, IT, etc.).Students from Private institutions will also be included in the next phase.

4. PEEF scholarships are awarded to which educational levels?
In the first phase, scholarships are given to students who have been enrolled in the next higher classes on the basis of their Secondary and Intermediate Examinations held in 2008 (annual).

5. What streams are included in the scholarship program?
All academic streams introduced by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education have been included in the scholarship program e.g. Science, Arts, Commerce, IT, etc.

6. How will the scholarships be distributed?
These scholarships will be distributed through the educational institutes in which the students are currently enrolled.

7. What is the eligibility criteria for the scholarship?
The minimum criterion set for the selection of candidates is “First Division” (60%) in their last Secondary/Intermediate Examination held in 2008 (annual).

8. Are there any quotas for less privileged students?
PEEF provides Special Quota Scholarships to orphans, children of Govt. Servants in BPS 1-4, ch minorities and Special Children (Disabled).

9. Do other provinces get any scholarships?
5% quota has been allocated for the students of other provinces to share the benefits of this scheme with the talented students of other provinces including Azad Jammu Kashmir and FATA.

10. What are LDDs?
LDDs represent the 15 Less Developed Districts of Punjab.

11. What are DDs?
DDs represent the 20 relatively more Developed Districts of Punjab.

12. How many scholarships does a LDD get?
LDDs get more scholarships (167 per district) as compared to DDs (125 scholarships per district).

13. Do I need to apply for scholarship?
PEEF has adopted a pro-active approach and will itself contact the eligible students. This means that you do not need to apply for the first phase of scholarships. Applications will be invited only from the eligible students identified and contacted by PEEF.

14. What is the process for award of scholarship?
After obtaining the relevant data from BISEs, PEEF writes letters to prospective students informing them that they have been shortlisted for scholarship. PEEF involves District Focal Committees (DFCs) for verification of student credentials to finalize lists of the selected candidates. These selected students are informed through confirmation letters that they have been awarded the “PEEF Scholarship”, and finally the scholarships are disbursed to the selected candidates through the institutions in which the they are currently enrolled.

15. Who will disburse the scholarship?
Scholarships are disbursed through Heads of educational institutions where the students are currently enrolled.

16. For how long will I get the scholarship?
Scholarships are offered for the duration of the course in which the student is currently enrolled, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

17. What are the percentages allocated to different levels and streams of education?

18. Can the scholarships be shifted to other priority streams of the same group?
If sufficient number of students are not available in a stream in any tehsil/district, the scholarships allotted for that stream may be shifted to the other priority stream of same group (e.g, from Commerce to Pre–Engg., Pre–Medical, etc.).

19. Can students from one Group be adjusted in another Group?
If the required number of students are not available for a group, then the scholarships may be adjusted in another group (but for the same gender) of the same Tehsil/District.

20. If candidates of the same gender are not enough in a particular stream/group?
If there are not enough numbers of candidates of one gender in any given stream/group, the same number of scholarships may be shifted to other gender of the same stream/group in same Tehsil / District

21. What if there are not enough candidates in a given Tehsil?
If there are not enough candidates in a Tehsil, for a certain group, the same number with equal gender distribution, will be divided equally amongst other Tehsils of the same District.

22. What if there are not enough Boarders of a specific stream?
If we cannot find the required number of Boarders in a specific stream, the same number may be shifted to Day Scholars of the same gender in that stream and vice versa.

23. What are the instructions for students who are short listed but are getting part time education in private academies?
Only FULL TIME students in regular institutes, if selected, will be awarded scholarships.


24. Is there any monitoring process for the successful candidates
PEEF will monitor the academic performance of students through the Principals/Head Teachers of the institutions in which they are currently enrolled, on quarterly basis.

25. What if the required number of special quota scholarships (SQS) applicants is not available in certain tehsils / districts? Will the quota for those tehsils / districts lapse or is there any other alternate available?
If such situation arises, PEEF will adopt following guidelines in order of priority to prevent SQS of a certain tehsil / district from lapsing and to maintain the total number of scholarship allocated to a district:

1. Monitering of Scholarship Holders
PEEF is developing a monitoring system that will enable to monitor and evaluate academic and general conduct performance of the scholarship holders on quarterly / bi annual basis. This will ensure that the scholarship holders maintain the benchmark performance and achieve much better academic excellences in periodic assessments.

The results will be shared with concerned education institutes that will convey the reports to respective students.

If students from one category (orphan, disable etc.) are not available at tehsil level, all the four categories shall be clubbed at tehsil level (this will happen as the number of special quota scholarship at tehsil level is too small and individual quota may go in fractions).

2. If number of applications for special quota scholarship is less than the number of scholarships allocated to one tehsil, the number of special quota scholarships shall be adjusted against the total allocation of Special Quota Scholarships at district level.

3. If the number of applications for special quota scholarships is less than the number of scholarships allocated to a district, the remaining number of (unutilized) Special Quota Scholarship (SQS) shall be adjusted to the merit Scholarships of the Tehsil where the original shortfall of SQS existed. This will keep the originally allocated number of scholarships within the same tehsil and total number of scholarships within that district constant.

4. If the number of applications for special quota scholarships and merit scholarships are less than the allocated number in any district, the same may be adjusted in other districts of the same BISE; first by adjusting the special quota scholarship applicants and then the merit scholarship applicants. This will ensure that the total number of scholarships allocated to a certain BISE remains constant.
